Legend has it that Muruga tested the famous Tamil poet Avvaiyar when she rested in the shade of a tree near the temple. She had become tired after walking for long hours in the hot sun. Lord Muruga took the guise of a young boy and appeared in front of her. They then indulged in an intelligent interplay of words.

Avvaiyar was moved by the sparkling intelligence of the boy and she pleaded with the boy to reveal his true identity. It is believed that Muruga appeared before her and showered her with blessings. The tree near the temple has assumed a divine significance and people worship this tree also. Plan your trip to this famous temple in sync with the festival.
